Spin Classes in Settle: Your Winter Guide to Indoor Cycling
Keep fit through winter with spin classes in Settle. What happens in a class, how to set up the bike, what to bring, and when to ride at TNT Hybrid.
The clocks are about to go back. The roads out of Settle are wet, dark and covered in leaves, and that evening ride or run is getting harder to talk yourself into. Most people's fitness quietly slips between now and spring.
Spin classes in Settle are one of the simplest ways to stop that happening. This guide explains what a spin class involves, who it suits, how to set up the bike, and how to get the most from it through winter at TNT Hybrid.
Quick answer: Spin is a coached indoor cycling class with sprints, climbs and intervals set to music. It is low impact, suits beginners and experienced cyclists alike, and you control the resistance yourself. At TNT Hybrid in Settle, spin runs on Tuesday at 7:30pm and Thursday at 6:30am, booked through the TNT Hybrid app. A £10 day pass lets you try it first.
What is a spin class?
A spin class is a group indoor cycling session led by an instructor. Everyone rides a stationary bike, and the instructor takes the group through a structured session: steady riding, seated climbs with the resistance turned up, standing efforts and short, fast sprints.
Classes are set to music, and the beat helps the whole room ride together. It is one of the reasons a session flies by, and why plenty of people who find solo cardio boring end up hooked on spin.
The key thing to understand is that you are in charge of your own bike. The instructor tells you what kind of effort to aim for, but you decide how much resistance to add. That is why a first-timer and a seasoned club rider can do the same class and both get a good session.
Who are spin classes for?
- Beginners. There is no technique to learn beyond setting up the bike, and you can ride at whatever level suits you.
- Cyclists keeping fitness through winter. If you ride with a local club such as Settle Wheelers, or just love the lanes towards Malham, spin keeps your legs and lungs going when the roads are grim.
- Runners and walkers. Spin builds your engine without the pounding of extra miles. It is a useful swap if your knees or shins need a break.
- Anyone who wants a hard session without planning it. Turn up, ride, go home. The instructor does the thinking for you.
Spin is low impact, but if you have a heart, knee or hip condition, check with your GP or physio before you start.
What happens in a spin class
Every instructor runs things a little differently, but a typical class follows a pattern:
- Warm-up. Easy pedalling with light resistance to get your legs and breathing going.
- Main set. Blocks of seated climbs, standing efforts and sprints, with recovery between each one.
- Hardest block. Usually a series of short, hard intervals towards the end.
- Cool-down. Easy spinning to bring your heart rate down, followed by a few stretches.
You will sweat. That is the point. But you are never forced to go harder than you want to.
How to set up a spin bike
A few minutes of set-up makes the whole class more comfortable. Arrive early and ask the instructor to check it for you the first time.
- Saddle height: stand next to the bike; the saddle should be roughly level with your hip bone. On the bike, your knee should keep a slight bend at the bottom of each pedal stroke.
- Saddle position: slide it forwards or back so your knee sits roughly above the pedal when the cranks are level.
- Handlebars: start them about level with the saddle, or a little higher if you want a more upright position.
- Feet: make sure your feet are secure on the pedals before you add any resistance. Ask us when you book whether you can use cycling shoes.
Your first spin class: what to bring
- Water. You will need more than you think.
- A small towel.
- Comfortable, breathable kit. Padded cycling shorts help if you have them, but they are not essential.
- Trainers with a fairly firm sole.
Go easier than you think in your first class. Learning to control your own resistance is the skill, and you can push harder next time.
Making the most of spin through winter
Spin works best as part of a balanced week rather than on its own. Pair one or two spin classes with two strength sessions and you have a winter routine that keeps your engine and your strength moving forward. Our strength and conditioning guide shows how to fit it all together.
If you want more variety, mix spin with Metcon or Evolve, our signature hybrid class. And if you are building towards a big day out next year, read our Yorkshire Three Peaks training plan or Hyrox training guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is spin good for beginners?
Yes. You control your own resistance, so you can ride at whatever level suits you. Tell the instructor it is your first class and they will help you set up the bike.
Is spin good for your knees?
Spin is low impact, so many people find it easier on their joints than running. If you have a knee condition, check with your GP or physio first, and make sure your saddle height is set correctly.
